Iphone/Ipad Appreview: Ithoughts, THE mind-map app

Mindmap App

I've loved mind-maps since being a kid. The disorganized (yet organized) sprawl of information has helped me cram for tests, sort out disorganized thoughts, as well as take excellent notes. If you're not familiar with mind-maps, they are basically visually-based outlines. The power of them is that the brains of some people are wired in a more-visual fashion, and they can assimilate mind-maps more readily.

My biggest problem was that my writing was so messy I sometimes couldn't even read the mindmaps that I had made. I liked changing things around in the mindmap, modifying them was a pain. I tried software programs on the computer. But these seemed clunky to use and I was bound to a desktop or laptop to be able to create them.

Then along came iThoughts for ipad and iphone. This software is a joy to use. You can easily and quickly create branches. You can also format your maps in different ways by changing the font-sizes and look (bold/italic/etc). You can change the color of branches and even assign little icons to each section. You can back up your maps to someplace like box.net (I'm not a big fan of Apple Itunes sync).

In spite of not having an option to include free-hand drawings into the mind-maps, I think this is THE WAY to input notes into your idevice. Input is quick and  re-organized on-the-fly.

The iphone version is a little cramped to work with because of the small real-estate. But the Ipad version is a joy to use. The Ipad with iThoughts is really a marriage made-in-heaven for me.

iThoughts for Iphone: **** 4 stars
(just because it's a little cramped to use because of the iphone screen)

iThoughts for Ipad: ***** 5 stars!
