Why don't we talk about Desktop PCs anymore?

Although my friends and I are all in the tech-field, we find ourselves talking less and less about Personal Computers, and more and more about Apple Iphones and Droid Smartphones.

I used to have a Palm Treo. I would Check news upates daily. But eventually the well dried-out. The Treo-news-board died along with all of its followers. I should have known by then that it was the end of the device. Palm ceased evolving their phone, and the lack of new news showed it.

Although me and my co-worker have an Iphone and Droid phone (respectively), not a day goes by that we don’t talk about Mobile devices and every new piece of news pertaining to them. We have Iphone vs Droid battles where we see who’s device finds stuff faster on the web (verizon/droid wins over at&t/iphone), or who has better apps (Iphone of course).

Why are Personal Computers so passe? It seems like all the companies are doing these days is slapping more cores on the processors. Sure they are faster then a mobile device, but all that power is wasted with us playing flash in a browser, or Farmville on Facebook. Personal computers are just plain boring now.

It used to be that we bought PCs in order to play games. But nowadays, games are going to the gaming consoles first and THEN getting ported out to the PC. With PCs ever getting better, even budget PCs can handle most tasks and games with style. Smartphones have reached a performance-point at which they are almost as good as a desktop PC, with the added benefit of portability.
