I've never jailbroken my Apple devices before. The biggest reason I haven't jailbroken before is fear of being stranded with a bricked phone (which has happenned to me twice randomly), as well as the look on my wife's face when I told her I had just voided the warranty. But I took the dive and did both my Ipad and Iphone 4 since it seems easy enough to restore.
After going through the jailbreak process, the Cydia app will show on your home-screen. After finishing the installation you can start searching for and downloading apps. There's an app called 'Rock' seems easier to find software on (and is more user-friendly) then Cydia.
Itunes still works with your jailbroken device, but just be careful about upgrading Itunes in the future as it may not recognize your device.
After just a few hours of playing with them, the Iphone seems like the big winner in the jailbreaking department compared to the Ipad. There's alot of customization that can be done, and useful apps that Apple doesn't allow in it's store. Some benefits and examples are:
- Mywi-which makes your iphone a wifi hotspot.
- A plethora of cutomized themes for your phone with lock-screens, backgrounds, and icons.
- My3g, an app that lets you initiate face-time over 3g (current face-time is limited to wi-fi).
- Many apps have free-trials so you can try before you buy.
As for the Iphone, I'm not sure if I can go back to an unjailbroken state. I would really miss the customizations and some of the apps I've found (apps I've longed to try to program myself or would be willing to pay someone to program for me). Apple really should consider incorporating some of the functions that jailbroken phones have. A jailbroken Iphone outshines even the best that Google's Android has to offer.
(I'm a Bleach fan if you can't tell from the Theme :) )
