Kindle and Ibooks Ereader Apps
I love books. They clutter my house, my bag, and my my mind. But no more, now I've finally been able to go to Ebooks. I held off actually buying a Kindle in case Apple would ever make a tablet formfactor device. My prayers were answered when Kindle started allowing their books to be read on a PC, and then on Iphone. The ultimate answer for me was the IPad running the Kindle app.
I tried looking for books on Apple's IBooks application, but there were many titles I couldn't find. Maybe it's because I read a lot of obscure self-help books. Ibooks DOES have many of the newer books, but it only seems to be the newest and most popular books out.
Although Kindle is a closed proprietary system for books. I feel that they are so well-distributed now that it makes that point almost moot. I love that I can read my Kindle books on my PC, iPhone and iPad (or even on a KINDLE!).
One thing Ibooks HAS been great for though is carrying around a ton of PDFs. I no longer have to carry a large-binder-full of Articles around with me. I can simply email the pdf to myself, and then open the pdf in ibooks from my idevice. No syncing needed.
The IPad, Kindle-app, and ibooks apps have changed the way I consume books and information. I don't need to carry bulky books and documents around anymore. The apps pretty much remember the page I left off on (especially if reading multiple books). I don't have as huge of a mess around my house, office, or bag. I'm no longer tied to a computer or a printout to read my ebooks and pdfs.
I'm glad for the competition that the different ereaders have been giving to Amazon's Kindle. If it weren't for that pressure I'm sure Kindle books would still be married to the Kindle device. Pricing was a little better when Kindle was a monopolistic force (Amazon actually wanted to keep prices down to increase demand), but overall I'm pleased with the convenience and selection of the ebooks available now.
Ibooks may eventually be more of a force to be reckoned with as their collection gets bigger. For the near-future I'll be loyal to Kindle for the variety of books available and the conveniences associated with using it.
